Spotlight: Drew Thomson

When putting a band together there will always be ideas that you won’t bring to the table for the group. Your aspirations of making a name for yourself in the world of bedroom chiptune won’t be something you want to leak into your progressive death-tech band now is it? Toying with different influences and styles is a healthy escape from the band environment for any musician, but more times than not that spark of independence can come off a tad rubbish, rushed and self-absorbed. Though when done with a high level of care, consideration and humanity  it is damn near as essential listening as the original act.

A prime example of this ‘essential listening’ is Drew Thomson.

Spotlight: Dialects

Dialects - 1 Good music has the ability to make you feel something deeper than just the notes and chords that enter your ear drum. Be it a simple tapping of the foot or total unadulterated throw-your-arms-in-the-air euphoria, music of any style or genre that rewards you with emotions and inspiration that you’ve never felt before is a rare and significant commodity and when found should be held onto close for years to come.

Review: While She Sleeps – Brainwashed

PromoImage

2012: A year of resounding victory for Sheffield’s While She Sleeps. With a near faultless debut full length, regular daytime radio airtime and tours pencilled in playing venues they only ever dreamed of, the stage was set for world domination. Then 2013 hit. Following a summer in the States, vocalist Loz Taylor started spitting up blood after performing. The ‘C’ word started to get thrown around. Recording was pushed back further and further. Uncertainty, tension and several hospital stays put the future of the band in jeopardy and the chance of a second album ever seeing the light of day increasingly doubtful.

That was then though. ‘Brainwashed’ is now.

Spotlight: Super Luxury.

 Super Luxury 04

Euphoria comes about in many forms. From staring at a waterfall as the sun goes down all the way through to getting more red Fruit Pastilles than yellow ones, life throws up many things to inspire and motivate us to be better people and see the world in a different light. Leeds’ very own Super Luxury have this same sort of power within them as well. The only difference is that except triggering an awe-inspiring moment, they are far more likely to make you curious as to what it would be like to pull your arm out it’s socket and see how wobbly it goes. Same thing though really. Continue reading

Live: Sleaford Mods – Cafe INDIEpendent, Scunthorpe 6/3/15

IMG_1012

“I used to be in bands. Fucking hated it.”

Last month Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods sold out the Electric Ballroom in Camden. A 1,100 strong crowd came out to watch two blokes, one laptop and a shed load of pent-up aggression wreak havoc on the Capital. An achievement that outweighs anything they could have ever dreamt of doing when they kicked off this project 3 years ago after a string of failed attempts at being in bands. Though still an exceptional milestone in the life of the pair, one thing that seemed out-of-place was the setting. If anything the Ballroom was too big. Sleaford Mods are about intimacy and intensity. About grubby toilets and stains on your pint. About being so close you can feel their spit on your face and smell the lager on their breath. That’s why they find themselves at Cafe INDIEpendent in Scunthorpe playing to a sold out room of 240 tinny swilling enthusiasts who are more than ready to take part in one of the biggest success stories of the past year.  Continue reading

Pop punk is a crowded community of late. Every Mark, Tom and Travis hates his home town, loves his friends, has been through a heartbreak or six and dispensing their angst by forming a band and shouting about their feelings is the best antidote. With the ongoing success of Neck Deep overseas and fellows brits Roam and As It Is collecting record deals in reward for their efforts recently, a considerable amount of pressure has falling on the British Isles for what’s next and all the eyes are watching and judging. Though with so many bands trying to claim the spotlight, what can you do to set your music apart from the rest of the pack? Continue reading

make do and mend

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON ALREADYHEARD.COM

A new Make Do And Mend album is always something to anticipate and receive with a frenzied appetite and the build up to ‘Don’t Be Long’ has been no exception. Following on from 2012’s ‘Everything That You Ever Loved’, the band have returned with a new set of punk rock poems aiming to reiterate to everyone why they are still the scene’s definitive heartbreak kids. Spotlight: Gone To Waste

gone-to-waste

When you are in the market for buying a cake, sometimes you want it with all the frills. Little dainty flowers, different colours inside, having it in the shape of a caterpillar or whatever your own personal favourite insect is or maybe even a photo of a treasured family memory. You want something to be gawked at, debated and praised till it feels like more than just a cake. It feels more like a piece of art.

Sometimes though you just want a cake. Just a bog standard no bullshit cake, yeah? You want cream and jam sandwiched between sponge and you want to smash it into your stupid face and be done with it. You want to grin from ear to ear as cream drips from your chin and know you made a good decision. Sometimes it’s best to not mess about and keep things simple and straight forward.

Enter Gone To Waste. Continue reading

EZ: Prepare yourself for the revolution.

Within the alternative scene, trends are thrown around like bottles of Jack Daniels at a house party. At first everyone wants a piece, mixing it with whatever they’ve brought themselves then passing it on and letting the next dude get in on the action too. Then as time goes on and interest is lost the bottle is left on a table waiting to be thrown away with the rest of the battered and depleted pieces of rubbish while the party moves onto the next big thing to quench their thirst. Now imagine this party was taking place in 2009 and rather than whisky the substance being chugged back is neon green and sweet as hell. That’s easycore you’re drinking there mate. Continue reading
